Although there have been changes in the educational access and success of students living in low socio-economic areas, educational gaps still exist in relation to the college aspirations of these children. The gap in the representation of low socio-economic students is due to the lack of encouragement and access to college preparatory information.  

While analyzing data from her research entitled "Female African American High School Students: High School Experiences Influencing College Aspirations", President Dr. Brooks discovered that culture, lack of knowledge, and lack of role models play a huge role in the college aspirations of children living in low socio-economic areas.
